RANDOM QUESTIONS
What's the concept ?
An illustration that could have been an art for a J2 High School or College AU fic. I read a lot of College AU recently thanks to some links I found at
spnstoryfinders so I was in a mood for some super schmoopy J2 art. In addition, it was also a training : believe it or not but I just SUCK at drawing kisses. I wanted to try (and I will try again
) because kisses are one of my technical weak points when it comes to illustration. I hope this one is OK...
Into a schmoop phase again ?
Yeah, yeah.. I drew something very gore recently (you will see that soon
) and I needed to let the steam off somehow so schmoop is always the solution. In addition, I may have drawn some arts where the head of a living dead is resting on the roof of the Impala in a blood mess or where Dean strangles a vampire with a cassette tape but I also enjoy schmoop arts from time to time. I am a hopeless romantic after all..
Why Jensen seems taller than Jared ?
I cropped the image during the inking but the pencil sketch was different : in fact Jensen is jumping in Jared's arms and Jay is catching him, that's why "Freckles" seems taller in the picture. You just have to imagine that Jensen's feet are not touching the ground even if it's not really obvious on the illustration above.
You draw more and more comic style illustrations, are you done with CG paintings ?
Nooooo! You're kidding right?! Photoshop is not my only "toy". I also like to have fun from time to time with Manga Studio but also with Painter, Illustrator or with traditional media like acrylic, poster paint, pencils and watercolors. The CG paintings with 7899679 layers will be back soon, don't worry.
TECHNICAL RAMBLING FOR THE FELLOW PHOTOSHOP USERS
(and for people who don't have an allergy when they hear the words "clipping path" )
What software did you use ?
Manga Studio for the inking and Photoshop CS for the screentones and colorization.
How long did it take you ?
Not long at all! 4-5 hours top (and I was surfing the Internet at the same time so...)
What about the set ? Is it a digital screentone ?
Yes and No. In fact even if Manga Studio has a big choice of digital screetones available, I am not really satisfied with their quality (not enough details, too dark, the black outlines are too thick, etc...) so I use real screentones instead. I live in Tokyo so it's easy for me to just go to the nearest art shop and to find the best screentones for my fan arts. In addition, it only costs between 250 and 550 yens (less than $4) so, why not! Once I bought the screentone, I scan it and then I add it to the picture thanks to Photoshop CS. Not only the quality of the image is far better than a digital screentone but I also have more choice.
I don't live in Tokyo!!!!! Does it mean I can't have great screentones too ?!!
Calm down. Some of the screentones available in Japanese's shops are also available on the Internet. I recommend you the Deviant Art gallery simply called "Screentones", you will find there a very large choice of sets, gradients, fractals, flowers, etc...for your drawings and comics. Enjoy!!
A little step by step to see how you proceed from the start ?
Ok, let's go!
1) Sketch and Inking
First I draw a rough sketch with a pencil on a piece of paper, I scan it and I ink it with Manga Studio. I reach the result below.

2) Cropping and Screentones
I open the picture in Photoshop CS, crop it, and add the scanned screentone on a separate layer.

3) Colors
Then, I start the colorization, with a layer practically for each element of the set (Jared's jacket, Jensen's hair, the sky, etc..) but also for the shadows and highlights. For this fan art for instance, I have a total of 24 layers. Here is a gif so that you can see the different layers (I sometimes put 2 layers in one animation step because having a gif with 24 animations steps would have been a little bit too much
)

And then, it's over!! Tadaaaam, you can now leave and read more College AU!
That's it for today, hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
See you soon ^^

PS : I think that thanks to rhythmsextion, the problem of my invisibility is solved! Apparently it's because I was checking the box "Dates out of order" when I posted something!! Argh!! I hope that you will see me now ♥

Date: 2010-11-05 03:24 pm (UTC)You too ? I don't know what to think about them but at the end, I just realized I read a ridiculous amount of them. And now, I even draw fan arts... The end is near.... But at least it proves I can draw something cute from time to time (before breaking the fangirls' hearts with "Closer" next week ^^)
Thanks a lot for the comment and for helping me solve the problem of my invisibility ^^

You should definitely practice more kiss art *cough*
As John Winchester once said : "I am working on it" ^^
screen tones are the the little dots the background exists of, so the drawing looks more comic like?
Yes absolutely! You see a manga page ? The screentones are everything that is grey. It can be, the gradients, the shadows, the sets, some patterns on the characters clothes. It's everything that is not the outlines in fact ^^ They are sold as sheets that work like decalcomanias but now, thanks to the digital softwares, we just scan them and add them to the pic digitally :D
Thanks again for the great comment about my art ♥
