Welcome to this Supernatural Death Themed Comment Fic/Art Meme and by "death" I mean the absence of life and not Death, the character player by Julian Richings.

You think that Sam dying in Dean's arms in All Hell Breaks Loose or Dean being eaten by a hell hound were the most beautiful scenes of the show? A Bleak Understanding in Reverse, a fic where Sam dies of a brain tumor is one of your favorite stories of all time? You wish there were more art like this one and this one?

Supernatural AU, inspired by What Dreams May Come and The Fall

Michael woke up from a twelve year coma in a place he did not remember with the mentality of an eighteen year old in a thirty year old body. The doctors say that the damage he has sustained is extensive, that it is a miracle that he even woke up. Then there's a snag - his brain is mostly deteriorating and it is likely, if it doesn't start healing soon, he will die just as he is finally getting to live. Enter Jimmy, the eccentric paraplegic in room 1408. An unlikely friendship leads them both down a very bizarre road as Jimmy begins telling Michael a story - the epic love of Dean and Castiel, two men destined for each other and yet separated by fate; one sent to an early death while the other spirals into a depression from loss that takes him down another road entirely. It's a story of Heaven, Hell and a world in-between, one man fighting to save his soul mate while another fights to awaken his. It is a story of love, the afterlife and what it means to truly want something more than yourself.

The afterlife looks grim for the Winchesters: Heaven's full of angels they've pissed off, Purgatory and Hell are obviously off the table, and if they dodge their reapers they'll go vengeful. Besides, as long as you keep existing, you can always get dragged back into the fight, like Samuel Campbell or Jo. So one of the brothers (brother A) comes up with a drastic solution--the Colt. Shoot yourself with it, and you just stop. He tries to convince brother B, but brother B understandably thinks that brother A has completely lost his mind. So brother A takes the one-way ticket to oblivion by himself. Whether brother B follows when he finds out is up to you.

Post-apocalypse-of-your-choice, against all odds, Sam finds his way back to Dean. That's the good news. The bad news is that Dean has been losing weight and feeling lousy lately, and before long he's in pain all the time and really, obviously sick. Sam can see what's happening and helps as much as he can, but it's not like there are doctors around to fix it or even tell them what's wrong, and Dean, at least, finally accepts that he's going to keep getting worse.

Up to you how they decide to deal with it then.

Sorry for such a long prompt: At the cemetery in Lawrence, Sam can't break through and stop Lucifer. Sam/Lucifer beats Dean mercilessly, and leaves him to die on the ground. As Dean dies, Michael comes to Dean and offers him one last chance to bring him back to life if he says 'yes' to him and battles his brother. Knowing that there's no other way to stop Lucifer since Cas actually destroyed Adam's body with the holy Molotov cocktail, Dean agrees and Michael brings him back to battle Sam/Lucifer before he destroys the world. In the mean time, Sam, seeing that he has killed his brother, is finally able to take control but before he can open the portal to the cage and jump in, Dean comes back to life as Michael and Sam spreads his arms out and allows Dean/Michael to stab him in the heart with an angel blade. Michael, seeing the job is done, leaves Dean. Dean comes to next to Sam's body, utterly alone and bereft.

There's a reason Sam didn't hunt or look for Dean when he disappeared ... he was sick (cancer, heart condition, etc). Sam was going through treatment, but stopped going when the doctors told him it wasn't working. Sam heads for Rufus' cabin because he can't think of any other place he would rather die, but finding Dean was already there throws him for a loop. He's just so happy to have Dean back that he doesn't tell Dean he's sick right off, but as his health begins to get worse, he tells Dean the truth. Dean understands now why Sam didn't want to hunt anymore -- he just wants to live his last days in peace and Dean gives them to him.

Still too ill from the inbound trip to return to the present, he stays there for a time, grieving and reflecting on what's been lost, the mistakes that were made and the blame that must be apportioned before he makes the long journey home.
