Douce France Q&A

Where does the title come from and what does it mean?

Douce France is the name of a very famous French song sung by Charles Trenet. It means "Sweet France" and was written in the 1950's.

What do the sentences in French in the comic mean?

I couldn't put asterisks everywhere to write down the translation in the comic so here are the translations:

- P.1 (Cover):
Douce France: Sweet France

- P.5:
Andouille: dumbass

- P6:
T'es vraiment qu'un con!!: you're really a jerk!!

-P.9:
Tu t'en souviens: do you remember?
Et c'est reparti: here we go again...

The Nationale 7 (National Road 7), is it that famous in France?

It is. It's the road French people used to take to go on vacations in the South during the summer vacations. It goes from Paris to Menton (a small town near Cannes, the town where there's the International Film festival). It is linked to a certain idea of nostalgia, good times spent with your family in a period that seemed easier. It has become the symbol of a certain way of life "à la française" and of the "Trente Glorieuses" (The Glorious Thirty). French singer Charles Trenet (the singer of Douce France) even sung a song about it, called Nationale 7.

Who's the guy between Cas and Dean on page 11?

Bertrand Delanoe, the Maire of Paris. One of the rare democrat Maire of the town is famous for his "Paris Plage" (a big artificial beach built in the middle of Paris for all the Parisians who can't go on vacations) and also because he's one of the only French politicians to be openly gay. The Republicans were sure Bertrand would never get elected because the French are conservative and that they wouldn't vote for a gay politician. Not only he was elected Maire of Paris twice but according to practically all the surveys, nobody gave a shit about his sexual
orientation. The French Republicans didn't understand that the only thing Parisians wanted was someone who wasn't corrupted like the preceding Maire.

So, same-sex marriage isn't legal in France?

Not yet, as I said in the disclaimer, but we are close. Well, "close"...the project will be discussed next year at the French senate, but it will be hard because some Members of Parliament and Maires (Democrats and Republicans) are against. According to them, if the project is adopted, it's the end of our civilization and family as we know it, the Cylons will attack, the zombie apocalypse will finally happen and Jensen will loose all his freckles. Long story short, the day the gays and lesbians will say "I do" is not for tomorrow in France.

Castiel, does it really sound like the name of village to you?

As a French, yes, a lot. I am not completely wrong because Castiel is the name of a village in Switzerland.

Tools of the trade

- Photoshop CS
- Painter 12
- Photography (Photo paintover on the cover and logo of Paris Match magazine, p.4)

Voilà! That's it for this year!
See you soon.

Hello !! ^o^
When I told you I was REALLY busy with my Xmas exchange, I wasn't lying, huh? Please, roll around in my comics, that's wht it's here for :)
Yes, huh..Sam...I couldn't resist. I thought it was funnier to draw him half bald. And grumpy. Artists always draw Jared with a beautiful smile and a beautiful hairstyle but I decided to change this a bit ^^
Thank you very much for your kind words about my Xmas exchange art ♥

J'ai du aller à Cannes et Mandelieu une fois, j'avoue que malheureusement, je voyage assez peu en France. Je manque de temps et en plus, je n'ai pas le permis ^^;;
Merci beaucoup pour ton commentaire très gentil sur ma BD ♥

Ha! Ha! Sorry about the last panel, I couldn't help it ^^
I really wanted people to believe Sam couldn't be there because he was already dead (I am meaaaaaan ^^). I only have one regret, I should have drawn him in Florida with a kind of Hawaiian shirt ^^
Thanks a lot for your kind words about my comics ♥

Wow! Things in your country don't seem to be funny at all O_____o
This member of parliament is completely crazy! Is he missing "the good old days" of the 1940's or what? Maybe we should build a time machine and send him there for a while ^^;; Good god...
Thanks a lot for your kind words about my comics ♥
I love your icon, it's beautiful ^^

Oh my god, poor you!!! Your comment shouldn't have made me laugh so much ^^ Apparently your stay in France was full of adventure. Imagine what my everyday life looks like! For me, it's that kind of things all the time! There is ALWAYS someone or something on strike in my country! When it's not the Post office, it's the teachers, when it's not the teachers, it's the means of transportations ^^;;

I hope that if you come back one day, your stay will be better and that you will find a place too pee when you need to. Toilets are easier to find now than several years ago, you even have guides :D

Thank you very much for your kind words about my art ♥
Glad you liked it and that you loved my "French Castiel" :)

Don't worry, I understood what you meant by "old romance tale", that's the kind of atmosphere I wanted for this comic. The key word is "nostalgia", that's why I worked on sepia and brown tones. I'm really happy you noticed this kind of detail.
I love working on the panel with the wedding picture (even if I couldn't help laughing because I've never thought I would have to draw the Maire of Paris one day in one of my Spn comics). I love drawing gore but cute stuff is good from time to time :)

Ha! Cas was pretty hard to draw as an old man, I must admit. Dean was far more easier :) I just couldn't see him as an old man ^^
Sam wasn't random ;) If you draw a comic about Dean/Cas, people are going to wonder "And Sam?". I just answered the question before it was asked and I loved drawing him as an old man :D
Thank you very much for your kind words about my art.

Oh my god, don't tell me about the Chibies. I had more problems drawing these freaking chibies than the rest of the comic! It's hard and it's not my style at all xD Dean is actually pretty hot for a 78 year old ;) I LOVED drawing him as an old man! It was easier than I thought but Cas, OMG, Cas as an old guy? It was really a challenge! I couldn't picture him as an old guy, IDK why!

Thank you so much for the great comment about my art ♥

It´s totally the sentimental mood all about them aging and having to wait so long. ;-) Your image of how they´d look as old men was so matching, too.

I never would've guessed ;) The end result was awesome and I think they're perfectly gorgeous! Brava, brava, brava!

Oh, hello Doctor :D
I'm really happy you liked the comic because my main pairing is Sam-Dean/J2. I don't have the habit to draw Castiel (or Misha) a lot so I was afraid to have his likeness wrong ^^

This prompt got completely out of hand. I was about to draw one or two artworks and then, screw it, I decided to draw this short story. I was the right person for the job: I am French and I LOVE the 1950's in my country, it's a great period, very inspirational ^^ I have a lot of books and magazines at home so I didn't have to do a lot of researches.

Thank YOU for enjoying the story. I am really glad you liked you Xmas present!
Merry Xmas to you if you celebrate it and Happy Holidays ♥

I love your art. Your drawings of older Dean and Cas are great - realistic aging. Although I don't live there any more I'm a native European so the comments about the French strikes were very funny :o)

So very sweet. I really like your pictures of Dean with the lamb and Cas with the dog. They look so happy, so rare on SPN. The brown tones are very warm and peaceful. I like your comments about the strikes. What else is there to do but keep a sense of humor about it? Another lovely work of art from you.

Oh you know, it's hard to keep a sense of humor when it comes to French strikes. There are strikes all the time, for everything and anything. I am really fed up and my subway line is particularly concerned by this problem -_____-
Glad you loved the colors. I drew this comic as an "old romance tale", that's the kind of atmosphere I wanted to obtain. The key word is "nostalgia", that's also why I worked on sepia and brown tones. I'm really happy you noticed this kind of detail. ♥

Ha! ha! That's what I wanted! I wanted people to believe that Sam was dead and there was an unhappy ending but no, for once, it was a happy story ^^ To be honest, I drew this for a Christmas gift, I couldn't draw something sad ^^;;
I'm very happy you enjoyed it so much!
Thank you very much. :)

Would you mind if I made it into a pdf?
No, no, that's ok, it is not necessary, thank you very much ^^ There is already a PDF version available here if you want:
