Douce France Q&A
Where does the title come from and what does it mean?
Douce France is the name of a very famous French song sung by Charles Trenet. It means "Sweet France" and was written in the 1950's.
What do the sentences in French in the comic mean?
I couldn't put asterisks everywhere to write down the translation in the comic so here are the translations:
- P.1 (Cover):
Douce France: Sweet France
- P.5:
Andouille: dumbass
- P6:
-P.9:
Tu t'en souviens: do you remember?
Et c'est reparti: here we go again...
The Nationale 7 (National Road 7), is it that famous in France?
It is. It's the road French people used to take to go on vacations in the South during the summer vacations. It goes from Paris to Menton (a small town near Cannes, the town where there's the International Film festival). It is linked to a certain idea of nostalgia, good times spent with your family in a period that seemed easier. It has become the symbol of a certain way of life "à la française" and of the "Trente Glorieuses" (The Glorious Thirty). French singer Charles Trenet (the singer of Douce France) even sung a song about it, called Nationale 7.
Who's the guy between Cas and Dean on page 11?
Bertrand Delanoe, the Maire of Paris. One of the rare democrat Maire of the town is famous for his "Paris Plage" (a big artificial beach built in the middle of Paris for all the Parisians who can't go on vacations) and also because he's one of the only French politicians to be openly gay. The Republicans were sure Bertrand would never get elected because the French are conservative and that they wouldn't vote for a gay politician. Not only he was elected Maire of Paris twice but according to practically all the surveys, nobody gave a shit about his sexual
orientation. The French Republicans didn't understand that the only thing Parisians wanted was someone who wasn't corrupted like the preceding Maire.
So, same-sex marriage isn't legal in France?
Not yet, as I said in the disclaimer, but we are close. Well, "close"...the project will be discussed next year at the French senate, but it will be hard because some Members of Parliament and Maires (Democrats and Republicans) are against. According to them, if the project is adopted, it's the end of our civilization and family as we know it, the Cylons will attack, the zombie apocalypse will finally happen and Jensen will loose all his freckles. Long story short, the day the gays and lesbians will say "I do" is not for tomorrow in France.
Castiel, does it really sound like the name of village to you?
As a French, yes, a lot.
I am not completely wrong because Castiel is the name of a village in Switzerland.

Date: 2012-12-07 11:12 am (UTC)Huh...not really ^^;; In fact, I drew a happy end because it was for a Xmas exchange. If I had drawn this comic for me or for a RBB, Dean would have proposed on Castiel's grave (= Cas died before same-sex marriage becomes legal). You know me now, someone always has to die somewhere in my art xD
Thanks a lot for your kind words about my comic!

J'ai du aller à Cannes et Mandelieu une fois, j'avoue que malheureusement, je voyage assez peu en France. Je manque de temps et en plus, je n'ai pas le permis ^^;;

Date: 2012-12-07 03:50 pm (UTC)I live in Venezuela and I went to Paris, France when I was 12(I am 23 now) and I am forever traumatized about France because of the strikes.
We have vacation tapes of me crying in front of the Louvre because it was on strike and a bunch of people were outside with signs and stuff and I WAS TWELVE AND I NEEDED TO PEE SO BADLY but I couldnt get in because of the strike!!!! hahahahha. Im on the tape crying and yelling "ARE THE FRENCH BATHROOMS ON STRIKE TOO!?" hahahaha.
Then another day we spent half the morning on buses to get to the Musée D'Orsay and when we finally arrived, the door was closed and someone printed in a hurry a sign that said that they were on strike.....
Two out of 4 days in Paris and I couldnt see two of the best museums(or PEE!) because of strikes! X'DDD
As for this absolutely wonderful comic, it was so beautiful. I love when fics make Castiel French. I dont know why but I think it suits him so well.
<3 this was really adorable. I hope France passes same-sex marriage soon, we LGBT ppl deserve to get married in the City of Love. ;D hahaha.
Thanks for drawing this lovely thing. <3

Date: 2012-12-07 09:56 pm (UTC)Sadly the opposite is true either. My country was a fairly typical Europian countury and than some years ago the Gay Parade was attacked, and now one Member of the Parlament said, that we should start counting the Jewish people... So you know one step back... and then another one...

Date: 2012-12-10 11:00 am (UTC)This member of parliament is completely crazy! Is he missing "the good old days" of the 1940's or what? Maybe we should build a time machine and send him there for a while ^^;; Good god...

Date: 2012-12-07 10:26 pm (UTC)The entire thing, so pretty and I love the feel of an 'old romance tale' that it had. I don't know if I can properly explain it, the whole dream/memory feeling of it was just lovely.
Your work continues to bring me much joy!

Date: 2012-12-10 12:00 pm (UTC)Don't worry, I understood what you meant by "old romance tale", that's the kind of atmosphere I wanted for this comic. The key word is "nostalgia", that's why I worked on sepia and brown tones. I'm really happy you noticed this kind of detail.
I love working on the panel with the wedding picture (even if I couldn't help laughing because I've never thought I would have to draw the Maire of Paris one day in one of my Spn comics). I love drawing gore but cute stuff is good from time to time :)
